Piano Street Magazine:
The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more

He's good, excellent phrasing even in the fastest and hurriest places. His transcription of Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca sucks though in my humble opinion. Did you know he "didn't start serious piano studies until age of 16"?

Yeah, I think I read that on his website somewhere.

I actually haven't heard much of his music, aside from the clips on his website and a video I downloaded (seems to be from a broadcast of a concert) of him playing the 13th Hungarian Rhapsody.

He seems to have a very solid technique.

What is he best at?

I haven't heard much from him either so far, but enough to tell he indeed has consistent technique. Rachmaninoff's 3rd, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody II, Cziffra's transcription of the Flight of the Bumblebee and his own transcription of Mozart's Turkish March, there was probably some Tchaikovsky concerto too which I can't recall now. The Cziffra recording (with Volodos playing his transcription) was available at ftp://chopin:chopinfiles@chopin.chopinforum.com/public_html/The Tempest/  I think  ;)

Volodos studied with my current teacher.

What I admire most about him is his phrasing and musicianship.
For a good laugh, check out my posts in the audition room, and tell me exactly how terrible they are :)
