on: January 11, 2010, 08:46:30 PM
Could anyone tell me what THEY THINK is the easiest piece by Rachmaninoff?  :)

I would begin with Prelude Op.3 No.2 in C# minor, like most other people. You can then move on to Op.32 No.12 and No.10.
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

REALLY??? Man - if that's one of his easiest, then Rachmaninoff must have been pretty harsh on the beginners...

Isn't that like Grade 7 or something???

It would definitely suck to be his student.

The piece "Fragments" (1917) is not that hard. And the 3rd moment musical is not that hard either.

The nocturne from the 7 morceaux de salon (Op10) can't be much more than grade 5/6. The Romance (no 4) is also fairly basic. Even the barcarolle is worth having a go at (though I would rate it at grade 7/8).

Do not attempt the Bb major prelude Op23 No2!!!!! :-X
Currently rehearsing:

Chopin Ballades (all)
Rachmaninov prelude in Bb Op 23 No 2
Mozart A minor sonata K310
Prokofiev 2nd sonata
Bach WTCII no 6
Busoni tr Bach toccata in D minor

None of the Rachmaninoff compositions are easy.
But one that could be done without too many problems is the Moment Musical #3 (if I recall correctly)

His Op 32 #12 is not nearly his easiest piece.  The jumps and the hand spans in some spots are harder than some of the stuff in a bunch of his preludes.

His Melodie from Op 3 isn't bad at all.  It's got lots of accidentals and some weird chords, but nothing over the top difficult.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Moment Musical N.5 is not super-challenging - technically, I find it even easier than N.3 which requires some awkward hand-stretching.
Prelude op.32 N.11 is interesting too, but it's not easy to understand rhythmically.
