Anyone miss the threads from 2005-2006 ish?
on: January 21, 2010, 12:48:18 AM
I just realized that the front page of each section of the forum seems MUCH different than what it was 4 years ago!  What happened to all of the threads about the Revolutionary Etude, Liebestraum, FI, and lists of peoples' current Repertoire?

One thing I find a little strange are the "check the old threads" posts left on something that may have come up before.  I honestly like getting peoples' current views on something rather than sifting for an hour through the archives from this forum for what 'might' answer my question.

This is more of a vent because I realized that I've been a member since 2004 when I was starting high school, and can't believe this much time's gone by  :-\

Anyways, does anyone else miss the stuff that we discussed back then, when Bernhard was still around, and the pictures thread was still only on page 10 or 11 lol

Yeah, it did seem more fun back then.

It is true that the overall fun level seems to be in a bit of a dip. I do have a theory as to why this is. The question is, are you ready to hear it??

The reason for this is the fact that the current forum moderators are far more stringent about official rules. Back then people could post what they wanted and it was ok. Sure, there were some problems, but when all creativity was banished, those members that made this forum fun simply left.

Come on, is there anyone who didn't enjoy the legendary genius of Comme? Or the egotistical rants of Soliloquy aka John11Inch and a billion other nicknames. Sometimes a little self expression goes a long way. When it is stifled, it is no fun.

I think javaisnottoberecognized was the live-wire here  a year ago and he got banned~~
He had some good posts here and he motivated me to listen to pianists on You Tube
and to practice more.  There has been some members that has left and not returned...
I miss Peter too, and communist, db, concerto,.....ah, nothing stays the same anyhow~~
And the chat room was always busy a year ago~~ it was the social arena  where members had the chance to meet and get to know one another~~ and those days are gone.....
I was a member in a violin forum and all it had was threads, like here, and after a few weeks there, I left that forum and never returned....During last Summer, I hardly visited here nor left any posts  because I felt the change here~~

I think it has been more active in the past but for those who are here a while you start to see posts repeated over and over again, and it is hard to muster up the energy to answer something you have discussed repeatedly in older threads.

BUt it seems like more new people are joining, although they often ask impossible questions like "How can I play Chopin Op 10 no 12?"  Or, "How do I learn about music theory?"  There's been a certain drop in the level of informed members.

But I think that behooves everyone else, who is more informed, to try and post a lot, and keep up the discussion.  I dropped out for a while too after I thought the questions were getting unbelievably inane but now I can find a few to answer as long as I try and be patient.

I think the forum had a "Golden Age" and that is possibly gone forever.

We need informed members, but we also need big headed wankers and complete morons. It takes all kinds to make a place interesting and at this moment, this place is not.

I agree, and I think everyone should look for the weaknesses and try and make up for them.

If that means thalbergmad has to play a bigheaded moron and complete wanker, so be it.

Nope, it isn't you.  I feel the same way.  I have visited off and on, and found a few posts
to answer to.  I think forums have a tendency to become mundane after a while when there
are the same threads being  repeated.  I think also when students are more busy with their studies that has an impact upon the activity in a forum.  I find that people are more busy with their real lives and not take the time to reply a thoughtful answer.  As in another forum that I'm a member to, it's impossible to have members even comment upon my artwork and that becomes boring for me also.  I think forums has to change but as I have mentioned in my earlier post, the decline of knowing a member without the chat room it's impossible to get interested in posting around here because we don't know that member, only by reading the words.

I think it was from about the end of 2008 until about midway through 2009 where I pretty much stopped visiting (before that I was literally on every day, looking through threads, on the chat or posting).

I love the ridiculous posts!  And I do also miss the rants from some of the past members.  And I agree, there are a lot of people with under 10 posts with some of the craziest questions!

Ahh, I am glad to say that I was there when the forum was really busy (chat sometimes had 15 people or more in it!), and I'd hate to have not known how the good the forum was at one point <tear  :'( > lol.  The forum's still great, and usually my questions get answered, so no complaints, but I can't spend 4 hours at night anymore looking at the posts, there just isn't enough substance in some of these threads.

You might want to specify what category are we missing currently. I'll see what I can do to remedy ;D

I tried inviting people.  I don't know whether that ever did anything.  I emailed a few piano professors.  Maybe something like that would work.

What baffles me is that this membership is such a bargain that it should draw all sorts of people. Far more than the few I see posting here. Do we all pay to be here?

If so, it could simply be a cycle and new folks will arrive soon. I also sensed a change right around the holidays.

Speaking personally, I have downloaded enough sheet music to keep me busy so I may not renew for a while. I doubt I'm alone.

What a shock.  Who knew that Chopin's compositional oeuvre, which is certainly finite, renders finite interest!  If only there were more composers than Chopin, and a pianist other than Horowitz, perhaps the choice of topics wouldn't be so cyclical.

Also, I'm quite sure that Comme being gone, and Alistair and I being barely here, makes quite a difference, so to speak.  When everyone is following the same set of social rules and stigma, everyone is the same in a place like this.  Some are smarter, some are dumber.  Some are ignorant, some are versed.  Other than that, all the same.  Painting with one color.

How painfully, pithingly boring the lack of even a few splashes of color can leave a blank wall.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.
