Conductors
on: July 04, 2004, 12:13:33 AM
I am currently trying to become a conductor - by going to alot of Orchestra's rehearsals. Is anyone here a conductor - or can anyone give me any basic techniques or career routes? Thanks

Here's the trick:
1) go outside
2) pick up a stick
3) you're now an official conductor.

Honestly

I think there is a bit more to it than that. If that were the case then I wouldn't pay £8,750 to go to the Royal Northern School of Music. In some ways yes having a stick does make you a conductor but having a stick doesn't teach you how to visually put across dynamics, expression and tempo.  ;D

Q. - What's the difference between a bull and a symphony orchestra.

A. - A bull has the horns in the front, and the a@@hole in the back.
(My favorite conductor joke.)

Seriously, listen to a lot of music. Develop you ear as much as possible. There are summer festivals that have conducting programs, also lots of music programs at colleges/universities/conservatories have conducting programs.

Yeah - picking up the stick is the easy bit. Getting a group of people actually willing to follow the stick is the hard bit.
