Guidance for an amateur
on: January 30, 2010, 05:58:26 AM
I'm new to the forum, so.., Hello Everybody! You can all probably help me more that I can help you, but If I can I'll be happy to help out.

A little about me: I've been playing guitar for about 10 years. I know some theory about interval, rhythms, time signatures, chords, chords progression, scales and modes. Now I want to learn some piano.

Up until now, I've been practicing scales with both hands utilizing proper fingering. I've also (because of some knowledge of keys) improve some stuff with my left hand playing chords and a melody with my right.

My two major goals right now when it comes to the piano are, (which I hope some of you guys can help me)

1) Learning different styles. When I improvise I basically play arpeggios or some really lame block patterns with my left.  I want to be able to make my own salsa or jazz chord progression and be able to accompany it properly with my left while I do something else with my right.

2) Learn more a lot more about harmonic theory. I see a lot of piano players basically taking a one note melody and they can basically into a full rich extended harmonic chords. That's basically, what fascinates me about piano and why I want to learn. On the guitar you basically have one hand, on the piano you have two and that opens up a lot of harmonic possibilities.

So yea... That's about it. Right now I can't afford lessons and I think I can achieve my #2 goal with maybe a book or articles, so maybe if someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advanced.
