What peices would you choose to teach yourself with?

Posters of Pianostreet, I need your help!

Here's my problem: I'm a fairly good student (i've never taken a music exam in my life, but my teachers have said i could go for the professional exam certificate) but i feel like I'm losing touch with my instrument. This year, my teacher moved away and my new teacher wants to build my repitore. She assigns me easy pieces like the Moonlight Sonata, which I've been able to play since I was about ten. Then we rush through it in 3 weeks. Three weeks! I like the Moonlight Sonata and I'm willing to learn it, but I really want to improve my technique and there's no way I can do that with if I finish it in less than a month. I've tried asking her to give me harder peices, but she doesn't seem to understand why I want them. I'm not to hopeful, either, because I'm probably the only serious student in the piano school (we had a recital. all the students played like they were sightreading).

I'm looking for recomendations of peices that I could learn by myself, preferably about the same level as Prokofiev's sonatas and Chopin's first ballade in g minor. I plan to buy different recordings so I can listen to them and borrow different elements of interpretations... if that makes any sense haha. Could you tell me about good recordings of the piece you recommend if you can? I know this method will never be a substitue for a good teacher, but I've already been through 3 teachers in the past 2 years and i've seriously had enough of searching.

By the way, besides wanting to get better, I also want to try out for New England Conservatory Prep School without sounding like a complete disgrace when I move back to the USA this fall. in case that helps :)

I made my account just to ask you guys this question. This is important to me. Please reply!

I am always a little confused by people who come here asking questions and wanting guidance but also insisting on "teaching themselves" and that they don't need nor want a teacher ... *scratches head*

If you have to ask, then I would recommend you ask the advice of an individual whom you can actually play for in person, whom can really see/hear your strengths and your weaknesses, whom you can relay your goals to and somebody who can give you a personal and accurate assessment of what you need next.

nah, it's not that i don't need or want a teacher, it's just that i've switched teachers so often. I've had 3 teachers in the last 2 years and all of them kind of sucked. i had a wonderful teacher before i moved here and i learned so much! i would love another teacher like that but i can't seem to find one.

I guess i could ask the music teachers in my school...
