Baroque: Bach
Classical: Beethoven
Romantic: Alkan
20th Century: Ravel

Extremely difficult decision with romantic: I believe Chopin and Liszt are the two most important romantic composers. Then Brahms, Mendelssohn, Alkan, Schubert, and Schumann (in that order). And then there are a bunch of great later romantic composers too.

Also with 20th century, I am a HUGE fan of Debussy (close 2nd) and Shostakovich (close 3rd).

Classical: Beethoven for sure
Romantic: Either Chopin or Rachmaninoff.......... about a tie between the two
20th century: Ravel, but Prokofiev and Shostakovich for piano concerto

I can add some modern composers I broadly don't like:

Shostakovitch, Stravinsky, Walton, Arnold, Hindermith, Sibelius, Copeland, Cage, Glass.

But all the above have written the odd work I like.

Aww slow_concert_pianist, I love Shosty. But to each their own, I guess.

Are you talking about him as a whole or just his solo piano music? If you mean just solo piano music, I could maybe see that, but his concertos are really fun and the chamber music I am familiar with is really cool!

Only using major composers; otherwise it would be impossible (not that it isn't already).

Baroque: Scarlatti (Piano), Bach (Other)
Classical: Schubert (Piano), Beethoven (Other)
Romantic: Liszt (Piano), Bruchner (Other)
1900-1937: Scriabin (Piano), Bartok (Other)
Neo-Classical: Prokofiev (Piano), Ginastera (Other)
Darmstadt Era: Bussotti (Piano), Xenakis (Other)
Post-Darmstadt: Kurtag (Piano), Durand (Other)

Random shout-outs to Nono, Dufourt, Schnittke, Boucourechliev and Goehr.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

It is difficult to put my finger on. He is discordant in a cordant way. Ironically I like Kachachurian. Shostakovitch seems to "sit on the fence". However a few of his preludes and fugues are good.

Gali, welcome to Piano Street!

You do not need to post your link in multiple threads, and it is not relevant to some of the threads you posted it in (such as this one).

However, when I get home from school and onto a computer that does not block every other website, I will check your music out.

Early: Ockeghem
Pre-baroque: Monteverdi
Baroque: JSBach
Classical: probably Beethoven, with a soft spot for Schubert
Romantic: Bruckner (if you can call him "romantic"!)
Late-romantic: Mahler
20th century: Pettersson, Sorabji
Still living: hmmm....

In general: composers who "think outside their time's box", i.e. has a voice unique to his own and who has something to say.

Elliot Carter possibly falls in every period since baroque... ;D

Of course, JSBach is present in every composer after him worth mentioning.

all best,
gep
In the long run, any words about music are less important than the music. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not worth talking to (Shostakovich)
