Debussy Etudes
on: February 12, 2010, 02:16:54 AM
I don't know if this is the best board for it?

I'm writing an essay on the piano etude and am finding it hard to find anything that amazing about the Debussy etudes. Obviously a lot exists for earlier stuff and I've even found a couple of great books on Ligeti, but nothing really for Debussy apart from brief mentions of facts I already knew.

If anyone could suggest some good books to look at or knows a bit about these etudes and would be willing to share, then I would be really grateful

In The Piano Works of Claude Debussy, author E. Robert Schmitz devotes a chapter to them (around 30 pages), in which each is discussed in some detail.
What passes you ain't for you.

Also see "The Art of French Piano Music" by Roy Howatt. Very extensive treatment of Debussy, Ravel, Franck, Chabrier.

Sorry I meant Faure not Franck.

Thanks, I have finished the essay now. I was unable to find that particular Howatt book, but I did find one very similar in which the Debussy chapter was written by him- perhaps it was the same book you mentioned just under a different title...

The Schmitz I found very useful, a little melodramatic though!

How did the essay turn out?  I'd be very interested to read it, if you feel comfortable posting the material.

Might it not be more interesting to read through the études yourself and provide some of your own insights?  Or is this largely a research paper?

Best wishes,

yes it was a research paper. the next assignment I have is more along the lines of own insights/understandings/analysis- I have to select something from post 1900 that isn't related to what I chose for this one, so basically anything but an etude.

I don't know about posting but if you're interested I will message it to anyone who wants to read it when I get it back.
