The Spirit of Winter (and snow!)
on: February 15, 2010, 05:15:00 AM
Hello. In keeping with this idea of exploring the world with music in mind, I've spent this last week (where those of us on the east coast have had practically a week of stand still) finding music that evokes winter, w/ a special note to piano.

The pieces I keep coming across are:

-Chopin Op. 25 No. 11 Winter Wind etude
-John Cage Early Piano works -- The Seasons II. Winter
-Debussy - Children's Corner Suite - The Snow is Dancing
-Tchaikovsky - A Winter Morning
-Chick Corea - April Snow

DOES ANYONE CARE TO SUGGEST ANY MORE WINTER/SNOW PIECES (NOT LIMITED TO PIANO ONLY?)????

Thank you!

Chasse-Neige (but I'm on the east coast, too, and more disposed to anticipating spring than dwelling on this dreary winter  8) ).

Liszt Transcendental Etude No. 12 "Chasse-Neige"
Alkan "Le Vent" Op. 15 No. 2
A good piano transcription of "Winter" from Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"?

Sorry I'm not much help.

EDIT: Ha, even worse... someone already recommended the Liszt piece. Shows how awake I am this morning...

Not technically about snow or something, but that's what it always evokes to me.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

Your favorites"

Cool, another fan of the greatest hits of the last 400 years.
I liked George Winston's "The Holly and the Ivy" of his Winter album, I transcribed it off the LP and played it for an offeratory one Advent. I went to his concert once.  He plays grand piano on stage in his stocking feet.
