Ignaz Brull: German Romantic
on: February 17, 2010, 04:48:23 PM
I just came across a name I've not heard in a long time, Ignaz Brull (with an umlaut). I'm wondering what experience performers/listeners here have had with this composer.

I've heard Brüll's piano concertos and some solo works. Very Brahmsian sound, but I can't say that I am exactly running back to this composer to hear more. It isn't bad, though.

Also, word of advice: if you want to type a German composer's name that has an umlaut but don't know how, simply put an 'e' after the letter that needs it. For example: Brüll -> Bruell.

Brull rules D:

If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

I got the score to the Sonata and heard brief excerpts on Amazon of it (and other works on an all solo piano recording). The Sonata looks interesting enough, but I'm not spending money on recordings these days (saving for Opus Archimagicum :o).

Close, John, but I think it might have been his great grandfather!

Brull is nice enough, but would not spend money on more recordings.

However, I would and have spent money on Gernsheim and would thoroughly recommend his music.

Yet another name I don't recall. I don't see any solo piano recordings on Amazon, but a fair amount of piano trios and quartets, as well as symphonies, et. al. Maybe I'll look into it when my TIAA-CREF retirement account kicks in full blast (counting down the months - only 53 to go!) :-\

I don't think there are any solo works recorded old chap, but the symphonies are divine.

The piano concerto makes Schumann look like a part time hack and will hopefully be recorded.

If I remember correctly, Toccata Classics has something of his in the pipeline.

You must elaborate on this statement, because there are already a lot of piano concertos that make Schumann look like a hack. What is it like?

Indeed there are hundreds of concertos that make Schumann look like the 3rd rate hack that he was, but the Germsheim piece is an excellent example as he was a contemporary (just) of Schumann and a friend of Brahms and unlike these two well known composers, his works have almost completely vanished from the concert hall.

It is an early work and most melodic, but still packs the occasional punch without resorting to virtuoso displays. Probably closer to Grieg than Schumann or Brahms.
