Anybody play oboe?
on: February 28, 2010, 02:21:46 PM
I've just been given an oboe! One more instrument to add to the list...
Does anybody play, and if so any advice for starting out with it would be very welcome! Any recommendations of tutor books?
I already play flute and piccolo, so am not a novice woodwind player, but this is my first double-reed instrument so am trying not to assume anything.

I played oboe for about a year. It was so tough to get the embouchure correct that I had to quit to focus on piano. Hard to get a good tone and intonation also.

What a very funny sounding instrument. I've never seen one up close before unfortunately. Good luck with your oboeing.

I've heard that the oboe is deceptively difficult to learn.

It's a piece of wood that no one blows good.

Except for the A to tune the orchestra, Thal. Oboe players live for the nod from the concertmaster accepting the note.
First off the oboe is an octave instrument (not like a clarinet) and I believe it is in C. It will take some time to get used to the double reed placement and being able release breath slowly. The other wind instruments take your exhale at a more natural pace.
Good luck and enjoy!
