Opera transcriptions for piano?
on: March 03, 2010, 02:20:40 AM
I'm currently looking around for any good opera transcriptions for paino. I've already found a couple I really like (e.g. Donizetti by Liszt). If you can give any examples from something you've played or just enjoy listening to, that would be very helpful!

A potentially vast topic, but some of my favourites:

Wagner-Liszt Isolde's Liebestod (my no.1)
Bellini-Liszt Norma Fantasy
Verdi-Liszt Ernani
Gounod-Liszt Faust waltz

Bellini-Thalberg La Sonnambula; Casta diva; A te, o cara
Rossini-Thalberg Moses Fantasy
Verdi-Thalberg La traviata
Donizetti-Thalberg Don Pasquale

Tausig Fantasy on Moniuszko's Halka

Martucci La forza del destino

I'd like also to recommend:

Bush-Stevenson: The Minstrel's Lay (from Wat Tyler)
Berg-Stevenson: Wiegenlied (from Wozzeck)
Britten-Stevenson: Peter Grimes Fantasy.

I'd recommend more contemporary opera transcriptions if I actually knew any! Ronald Stevenson is one of very, very few people doing this kind of thing since, well, about 1920, really.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

These are indeed masterpieces of the pianoperatic transcription genre, very much in the wake of Lisztian tradition but at the same time shot though with individualism and the dual personalities of composer and transcriber; likewise, they are, as you say, real rarities in recent piano literature and very much to be savoured as a consequence.

There are probably about 10,000 to choose from, so i would ask if there are any particular arias or sections of an opera that you would most like to play.

I think these may be what you are looking for, but sadly I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to these:

Verdi/Liszt Concert Paraphrase on Rigoletto
Handel/Liszt Almira (Sarabande and Chaccone)

Anything from Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Die Zauberflöte, Apollo et Hyacinthus, or La finta giardiniera (all Mozart) that you recommend?
