Is this Welmar piano worth it?
on: July 07, 2004, 09:22:52 PM
Hi
For years I've been playing on a really old Godfrey piano.  It's simply awful yet it got me to distinction at grade 8 so I guess it served its purpose.

I now have a bit of money kicking around and I'm looking to get a new piano.  I was considering buying a 2nd hand Yamaha U1 piano but even though I can afford it, it's a bit over my budget.

I was thinking more around £1,000.  I seem to remember my old piano teacher having a Welmar piano (pretty sure it was) and I loved it.  It sounded 100x better than the Godfrey so I did a search on ebay and there's a shop selling a 12 years old Welmar.  It looks very similar to the one I used to play except it has 3 pedals.  No more information is given apart from the fact that it used to "cost" £7,500 new (I'd take this with a bag of salt).

The seller is asking £1,000 and I'm just wondering if that's a good price for this piano?  Is it worth it or should I look to buying a Yamaha?

Cheers

They´ve said this a million times now but here goes.
The BEST way to choose a piano is to play it (apart from Steinways which have an enviable reputation  ;)) so if this seller is near you (which he most probably is) go try it out.

It's 100 miles away which I guess is about as near as I'll get.

Of course I'd love to try out loads of pianos but living in the middle of nowhere in the north of england we're very hard pushed to travel around and play pianos, especially working full time.

I can't imagine a more foolish purchase to make sight-unseen than a piano. Even buying a used car this way makes more sense, because its easy to drive back to the seller if its a piece of crap. Such an exchange with a piano would cost several hundred bucks, and in reality, you'd probably be stuck with it.

Wherever you are in England, I'll wager it's less than a day's drive or train ride to a town with more than one piano shop. Take a day from your busy schedule and go shopping in the city. Piano shopping is fun... you won't regret it.

Oh of course I'll go and play it before buying - I'll be collecting the piano so I'll obviously practice with it first.

Just wanting to know if it's WORHT it as in the thread title - if it's in excellent condition is it worth the £1,000 asking price?
