Non classical pieces

Does anyone play Scott Joplin?   I have a couple rag pieces I used to try to play (The
Entertainer, of course, and Maple Leaf), but never quite got fluent in either because I don't have especially long fingers and they made my forearms ache.   Still, they are a fun change and I'd like to at least honestly say I can play them.

Is there a trick?  Are my arms so achey because I play with too much tension, or is this music just especially hard?   I don't play the watered down versions, I play the real deal.  Or, I should say... TRY to play.

Currently learning:
Chopin Prelude Op. 28, no. 15
Schubert Sonata in A Major, D.959: Allegretto

I didnt know you needed long fingers for playing ragtime :p

You might just not be used to the set of muscles used for those pieces yet. Keep practicing, but be careful if it gets too achy/painful.

Well, for playing the octaves in the right hand for The Entertainer, I have a very hard time with it.  Same with Alla Turca. At least The Entertainer is a slower piece than Maple Leaf.

Guess I just need to suck it up and practice.  And remember my advice to new players... patience!

Is this similar to having my eyes stay that way if I cross them at my mother?  ;D   It's settled then, my Joplin book goes with me to my lesson tomorrow!
