Regarding Piano Street Gold Membership
on: March 15, 2010, 11:57:56 PM
Hey there everyone,

I absolutely love this beautiful instrument!!  I should have started a long time ago but I am now 25 just starting absolutely in love with Mozart and working with these really awesome books that teach me in a way I can learn(no teacher, cannot afford it yet) called FastTrack(I own all 7 for piano).  I have only been playing for 2 1/2 weeks now and doing pretty well I like to think but I was wondering what everyone's opinion is regarding whether I should upgrade to a gold membership or not.  I really want to learn to play Mozart's K 33 which they have sheet music for here on the website and although my skill is not yet ready for that I was wondering is the money worth it for this site?  It seems they have a lot of music & members to talk to and get advice from, it's just difficult doing this all by myself(but also very rewarding when I finally figure something out).  Currently having difficulty expanding my chords to learn new 7th chords.
Anyone have any advice on this topic?

I think it's worth it when your skill level is a bit higher.   Most of the sheet music is above what you'll be able to play for awhile.   I've never played K33, but it looks simple enough.   Personally, I would wait until I got through the music that's included in my lessons.  I took a look at the website for the book and saw that Fur Elise is in the list of pieces you can learn.   I don't know if that's the true version, or a watered down one for a more novice player, but the piece in its original format is not that difficult either - as long as you can handle a chromatic scale.

The membership price is very inexpensive and I get a lot of my sheet music from here.  And I don't get mad when I find it's something I don't enjoy playing, since I didn't really pay for it anyway.
Currently learning:
Chopin Prelude Op. 28, no. 15
Schubert Sonata in A Major, D.959: Allegretto

Well you actually do pay for it. Part is your membership dues, part is your internet connection and don't forget the depreciation of your computer and software. Even so this membership is priced right.

From my point of view I must include in the benefits the cost of going to a music store. In my case a store that has this selection of SHEET music can't be found. If I can find a store, the piece I want will be included in a book. Here I get just the one piece I want.

Well, yeah.... technically you pay for it.... but I wouldn't count internet service and computer depreciation in that cost, because who gets that just to go to Pianostreet?   It's all about YouTube.  LOL

Don't forget, the instant gratification of getting the sheet music too.   If I decide that I want to learn The Witch by Tschiakovsky one minute, I don't need to get out of my slippers to get a copy of the sheet music.   Or maybe... your copy falls on the floor and your dog chews it up....  you get my point.

Plus there are the mp3 samples, though the ones I've listened to haven't appealed to me.  I tend to go to iTunes for those.

It is a lot for the price.  My only concern is the source that they get the PS edition from.  If that's crap, than they're digitizing that.  But for references, it's a lot of music for a little money.  I wish they would put make so you could download an entire composer at once, but I think Nils is thinking you subscribe for access and PS is the archive for the music.

I think Nils updates them too so the older piece might be upgraded later on.

I paid for a gold membership, 3 months. I can't play much of the music, its too hard. so instead of just picking pieces I like to play, I downloaded the entire music library!   ;D  I just went down the list of composers, and did all of one at a time. btw, to download a bunch of pieces from a composer at once, click on composer, and then 'view all pieces', right click on pieces and download without opening them.
So now I have tons of music... I made good use of my money.....   !!

If you are going to use a lot of it, then it's a very good price.

If you get any Rachmaninoff in your repetoire....I will be SO jealous!   My teacher just sort of chuckled and changed the subject when I brought a book of his compositions to lessons.  Of course, that was nearly 2 years ago....

does that mean they're way too hard to even talk about? or that he doesn't like rachmanninoff?

Hi, sorry if someone already mentioned it, I'm only browsing through the forum, but www.imslp.org is a great source of free sheet music. Lots of public domain stuff which would include most Mozart.

That means he thought it would be too hard for me.  At that point, it was.... maybe now... dunno.

Let me add to my comments above and mention the benefit this forum is for our connection to a wider community of classical piano players. At this moment I know no classical players. All of my contacts play popular.

Here there is a chance to read about the thinking of fellow players about mutual musical concerns.
