on: March 24, 2010, 12:25:07 PM
hey guys

I am going to study music next year in UK,

I am interested in piano performance and composition.

So far I know that Kings college and royal academy of music are both very good!

Does any of you know any other good colleges ?

Joan Havill at the Guildhall. She's just about one of the very best in the UK - and probably the most eccentric too! About the only other teacher I would go to in the UK is John Lill at the Royal College, but even then he's only a visiting professor.

As always, don't go to a conservatory or college just because of the name. Go for the teacher(s).

Agree with what was said about the teachers/colleges. I went to the Royal College and there were some excellent excellent teachers and some who were less good. Not to say they were bad, but no single teacher can represent the quality of a whole school. In any case, Royal college and Royal academy of music are 2 amongst the most reputed in UK

Trinity College of music is thought by some to have overtaken the Royal College in recent years. I have no perspective on the matter as I attended neither but I know people from all three (3rd being the Royal Academy) and I certainly get the impression that they are generally on par with one and other. Also It's quite common for a good teacher to teach at couple of schools. I went to Goldsmiths College (probably no one's ever heard of it, lol, but It's part of University of London dedicated primarily to music and the arts) and we had some teach who also taught at the Royal College. Anyway, just observations. I'm not good enough to know who the best piano teacher about is at the moment.

Although I never attended any, I think all the conservatoires in the UK have a lot to offer, both in quality of teaching, and the excellent networking opportunities that they give. All of them have accomplished piano alumni.  Don't overlook the music departments of universities.  Some of them have tie-ups with conservatoires - eg, Sussex University has a link with the Guildhall, and students go there for their performance training.  You might find that you get a good mix of composition and performance that way.
