on: March 27, 2010, 03:40:04 PM
i have a problem when i try to play this,
with each hand i can play it's part good,
but when i try to play it with both hands,
the polyrhythm confusing me,
i can't connect and play it with both hands,

did it happened to someone else here? what did you do?
can you show me how to play the 5th measure with both hands slowly?

I learned this by practicing HS first and then putting the hands together at tempo.  The strategy was to concentrate on the primary beats of the measure (i.e., where the left hand and right hand notes coincide), and expect the in-between notes to care of themselves and fall into place naturally.  It worked for me, but it's certainly not the only approach:

I now think it's probably a better idea to find the lowest common multiple—in this case of three-against-four, it's 12—and plot it out graphically:

 1xx2xx3xx4xx
 1xxx2xxx3xxx

There's a frequently-used device to enhance this approach that corresponds to the meter of the polyrhythm: "Pass the Golden Butter"

 Pass   the    den     ter
 1xx2xx3xx4xx
 1xxx2xxx3xxx

             Gol-      But-

Apply it to the notes:

Rinse and repeat until it's clean!  :)
What passes you ain't for you.

The pneumonic for the debussy arabesque is "Not difficult" use the LCM thing again and work out the beats.
