Concert 2010
on: April 01, 2010, 01:04:52 AM
In the planning stages of a new concert for the end of the year, this is what it is looking like at the moment. I put some different instrument performances in as well, I am of course not planning to learn these instruments (or transport a pipe organ around the place) :)

Bach/Liszt BWV 543 Prelude + Fugue 9:30 mins

Beethoven Appassionata Sonata mvt 1,2,3 20mins

Interval:

Albeniz: Iberia Suite selections:

Evocation 4:30mins

Corpus Christi en Sevilla 7:00mins

Triana 5:00mins

Godowsky/Albeniz: Tango 3:30mins

Godowsky Java Suite selections:
Godowsky - Java, vol. 1, no. 1 - Gamelan 3:30mins

Godowsky - Java, vol. 1, no. 3 - Hari Besaar, The Great Day 5:00mins

Godowsky - Java, vol. 2, no. 2 - Boro Budur in Moonlight 3:30mins

Godowsky - Java, vol. 3, no. 2 - The Gardens of Buitenzorg 4:00mins

Godowsky - Java, vol. 2, no. 3 - The Bromo Volcano and the Sand Sea at Daybreak 3:30mins

Impressive. I wish I could be there to hear it. Will you share some in the audition room?

I generally do not share famous composed pieces online for my own personal reasons. I have been encouraged to put a video of my next concert in its entirety online which I am considering depending on my near future concert aspirations, at the moment I am at crossroads between further developing my concert reputation or teaching. It is really an incredibly difficult choice (as I am very devoted to my students) but I am slowly tending towards performance more. I will of course have to use youtube and many other media to encourage some attention since these days it is silly to ignore these as publicity tools.

Wow, you must be very good to be able to present all those in a concert...nice program, love the Albeniz (Corpus Christi absolutely!), but am personally unsure of the Godowsky...

I think the Godowsky is the most risky to perform because of how difficult it is to get your fingers around them they are not written in the most natural manner (to perform them in concert is a step up for myself). But since they are rarely performed, have an enormous platform for musical interpretation and also that Indonesia is a close neighbor to Australia, I feel like it is suitable to be played (but the Godowsky is a questionable point in the program there is many other options to mix with the Albeniz). The Corpus is one of my favorite Albeniz pieces it is strangely not performed much maybe it is because of how risky it is to play (but Triana is a terribly mean piece that gets very layered in sound), I still have never played it note perfect!

A lot of the pieces in the 2nd half I chose because of the scope that they allow us to interpret them. They are very free especially unlike the 1st half of the concert, I like the contrast in that respect.

I must say I am surprised.  Most programs posted on this website are astounding for their boringness.  I almost love this program!  The second half of course is excellently put together, with the linkage of Godowsky and Albeniz.  I also love Java Suite.

Why would you play just a Sinfonia from a Bach partita? Why not play an actual, substantial stand-alone piece that Bach wrote, for instance the Toccata & Fugue in g minor, or the Fantasia in a minor (there is also a Fantasia & Fugue in a minor).  The opening piece seems uninspired, compared to the rest of the program.

The other thing is I really don't care to hear the a minor prelude & fugue played on a piano.  If one has heard a wonderful organ performance, the piano can never do it justice - ever.  Why not instead play Liszt's Fantasie & Fugue on BACH? Or either of the "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" pieces that Liszt did?

Otherwise, I salute you.

I always find the starting piece difficult to work out, I never like to start too difficult.
The Sinfonia does seems pretty small compared to the other pieces it is existing next to. I have some sentimental reasons for playing only the Sinfonia but it might indeed change as time goes by, I would like something not too long from Bach to start with and not too intensive to listen to.

This was exactly what I was thinking, the 543 is meant for the organ and it really moves you when you hear it played on that instrument. I did consider using a digital organ to perhaps perform it, but I have never done this in my life before and I do want to present my pianistic attempt at recreating the organ which I think might be more interesting than using a digital organ.

The Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on Bach to me is too "serious" for the type of feel I want to present, not to mention so much harder than the 543. Was also initially thinking Bach-busoni toccata in cmaj but that poses so much greater expression and technical problems than the 543 for me and might be too much for me for performance atm maybe I should attempt it. I really want to do some organ work for the piano.

...I actually just don't think Australia is at all enthusiastic about works like Corpus Christi...shame, really...and for sure, the Triana is one of those ridiculous pieces that doesn't sound hard in real life!
