How expensive is London?
on: April 03, 2010, 02:10:08 PM
I will be trying to get a place at RCM or RAM in London next year, to finish off my second year for a postgrad in performance. I am not sure lately if this is the right move, however, as people say how expensive London is, and the fact that I am broke so will have to acquire plenty of funding, on top of paying a £10,000 career development loan back from next february! (Although my parents are moving to a cheaper house, so they are going to lend me between 10 and 20 grand to cover that). Also heard it's very stressful, but to the point where people are 'running'!

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

'expensive' depends on what you compare with.

Exchange rates don't tell the whole story. You will need to compare the cost like items and the hours it takes at your job to earn that money in either country. The words expensive or cheap are meant for tourists staying in hotels.

I am under the impression London is just about the most expensive city to study music in. The school fees + living costs = :-\ :'(

'expensive' depends on what you compare with.

Cost of living, transport, etc. I studied at RNCM, which wasn't too bad financially.

I live and work in London.  Expensive depends on where you live - like anywhere.  Research rents first of all.

As stated above, all depends where you study, how close you want to live near the centre etc. Food is in general not expensive either and drinks..... well that depends on what type of student you are ;)
But London is not an expensive city to live in by definition.

I spent a couple weeks in London for work.  It's WAY more expensive than Buffalo, which is lower average US cost of living, I'd say.    A dozen Krispy Kremes was about 3x what we'd pay here.  (I didn't buy any)
Currently learning:
Chopin Prelude Op. 28, no. 15
Schubert Sonata in A Major, D.959: Allegretto

you know.... I'd like to annex my comment about London being expensive by saying what a great city it is.  I absolutely love it there!   If I had the opportunity to go study in London, (assuming I didn't have a child to raise, a mortgage to pay and several furry borders to feed), I would jump on it without a second thought.   You won't be planning to buy a flat there, so go for it!  Soak in all the history that will surround you.... just beware, their hamburgers are terrible.
