Try 54321 4321 321 from Eb, much more comfortable.

I personally prefer this two octave pattern, starting like the original poster going down from E: 54321 321 4321 (and now continuing without crossing to 5) 321 321 4321 321
But in a real piece you have to consider what you need before and after the chromatic run too.

I prefer two octave pattern too (if going up - starting from E - 123 1234 123 123 1234 123 1234 and again thumb on E'), but sometimes you just have to use fifth finger (one octave pattern) if you want to do it extremely fast (but with less control, too).

"Thumb on white" is mozartian fingering; and using forth finger is lisztian fingering.

Depends on what do you need. If I play e.g. Mozart KV467 or Chopin op.23 (coda) - definitely Mozartian. Because it gives more control and more power in every tone. But if I play Liszt's Chasse Neige - then there is no doubt I will play Lisztian fingering, because chromatic scales are used as an effect.
