grieg - nocturne op.54 no.4
on: April 21, 2010, 02:59:09 PM
Not the best sound recording.
Have a listen and let me know where you think I can improve.
Am I rushing the song? I know my trills are terrible!
Thanks.

Sometimes a piece has to start, and get a tempo. It's ok if you want to do some rubato in the start, but not all the time. Orelse it just feels slow, and I don't think you want that. I don't know this piece very well, and I don't have the score.. But I think your crescendos are too sudden, and it feels kind of stressful.

And you said your trills were bad. Saying it doesn't help very much, so start practising them ;P

And oh, don't call it a song. It might seem kind of poshy, but classical musicians wont take you  very seriously if you call them that. It's a piece :P

A 'piece' it is. I've not had much teaching and not a very good piano player at all so I don't really know the corrects terms and words to use.
Thanks for the advice I will try to do this! :-)

Good job :)

For my taste the grace notes should be faster, means closer to the following main note. In the "Piu mosso" part I would emphasize the highest voice, it gets a bit unclear there.

The trill parts represent birds, in my book. So try to do them not too literally (but of course still precisely), freely, quite fast, with a natural "bird intuition touch"...  8)

I think you are talented and musical. Don't be too concerned about your potential. But certainly, a good teacher would be important (I remember I said that before, don't know if you got one now)
You have got the polyrhythms basically right, in M. 12-13 they are a tiny bit unclear though.
Maybe you have still problems with stiffness (which may be the cause of the unclarity in the piu mosso part, for instance) and a good teacher could help you.

(Ahhh Grieg's lyrical pieces are gorgeous and recreative, aren't they? :) )

Nope, still haven't got a teacher- I'm not sure where I could actually find a 'good' one.
Thanks for the advice too, I will go back and try to fix these things :)

You play beautifully, Holden.  Keep pursuing the piano! :)
