Is cutting repeats a no-no for competition?
on: April 25, 2010, 09:43:43 PM
I'm selecting repertoire for a competition, and there is a time limit for each round. I'd like to try two pieces, but they won't fit unless I cut the repeats. While I haven't decided the exact pieces yet, possibilities of pieces including repeats include a Beethoven sonata, a Mozart sonata, a Brahms rhapsody, etc. I realize that when performed or recorded, the repeats are almost always included. Does anyone with experience in competitions know whether judges would frown upon omission of some repeats, to make the music fit within the time limit? Would it be viewed as destroying the structure of a piece?
Thanks.

Actually, TAKING the repeats is a no-no for competitions. Everyone almost always cuts repeats in competions. :)

And sometimes you cut even more. There are quite many pieces where the theme is payed in 3 different keys, like Chopin's f-minor fantasy. Then most of the times you have to cut one of them.

It would also depend on the piece i guess, there are a few pieces in which the repeat is specifically designed to alter the voicing or something like that. In such cases a repeat could be ueseful, but generally i would avoid it.

Maybe the Cliburn in 2011, but only if I reach some intermediate goals first, which will require a lot of time and discipline.

I guess the answer on repeats is that it can be done, but depends on the piece. And I would be very unlikely to consider making a cut other than a repeat (rather, I'd probably just find a different piece).
