Chopin Etude op 25/7

This is me playing op 25/7

I've been playing this for some weeks, and will probably use it in a competition in November.

Hi pianisten,

I just listened to your etude and believe there is much to commend it.  You've got a singing legato there, along with dynamic contrasts, drama, and some nice nuances too.  As you move closer to the competition, you'll undoubtedly be putting more finishing touches on it.  But by and large, it's already very good in my opinion.  One caution I would offer is paying close attention to the half-pedal releases, especially where the melody is in the LH, down in the bass or low tenor where the sonorities (and overtones) are thicker, especially where there passages also consist of passing and neighboring tones.  Where those passages are complex, the natural tendency is to focus on accuracy of the notes, but clarity is paramount in those instances.  I think you're doing fine with this piece.

I liked that very much.  I am especially impressed the way you "play" the rests.  It's like taking a breath and holding it.  I think you have an uncanny feel for this piece, if you've only been playing it for a few weeks.  You just have to clean up that big left hand cadenza.  But that will come naturally, I think.  Anticipate it, beginning the riten. in the measure before.  I don't know if you were aware of a few misreadings, or if they were just of the moment.  Meas. 7 and meas. 42.

In the intro you play Lento, but as soon as the right hand enters you rush it abit.
Try to imagine the left hand as a cello, wich is the solo, and the right hand is the piano accompanying him (so abit more to the background than you play it now).
Imagining it as 2 seperate instruments should also have the effect that you play it alot more freely: less trying to fit the left hand into the rythm of the right hand.

Thx! I've worked very hard on those rests, so it's great that you appreciate them
I had a lesson the day after, and I think we fixed the left hand. It was a bit.. "Play the tone in the bottom of the key"-school like, but that got fixed when I started playing it a tiny bit faster.
And I noticed the wrong notes, but I didn't think it was reason enough to do a whole new take, but thx for the reminder

There are 2 different tempo marks in the beginning: Lento and quater=66. And the lento-bar is filled with those small notes (I don't know the name in english.. or swedish) so I think it's more of a "Take your time"-tempo. And I don't agree that I rush when the theme starts. I see it like a very beautiful melody, but something isn't right. I don't think Chopin would've written the chords like that if they would be strictly in tempo.
But it's so much about taste, and I still appreciate your comment, though I don't agree
