Contemporary/Modern music suggestions
on: May 07, 2010, 11:36:16 PM
Hi Guys,
I've reached that point in my music development that I've started to enjoy modern music; namely Shchedrin's piano music, i love most of them, and just learned his humoreske.
I was just wondering what other composers I should check out (specifically solo piano works that I can learn as well); keeping in mind that, beyond Shchedrin i know nothing about contemporary composers.
Cheers,
Aslan

A terrific book I've enjoyed for years, with music in a variety of styles and levels of difficulty, is the Peters Edition (publisher) WALTZES by 25 CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS.
You might enjoy Bartok's MIKROKOSMOS books, graded into various levels (publisher Boosey and Hawkes).
There should be composers (and other pianists) living in your city, perhaps working in a university. It could be interesting to meet them and ask what piano music they have composed (and played).

Can the Bartók really be considered contemporary or modern? It would be like calling the television a new invention. However, if you like Shchedrin, you might like to check out a lot of other recent Soviet composers, such as Gubaidulina, Kapustin, Kabalevsky, Boris Tchaikovsky, Schnittke, and many, many others. You can find some examples
at this website
, which is a great resource for anything in 20th century Soviet music.
