Trying to learn piano - some advice please
on: May 11, 2010, 07:25:02 PM
Hi there,

I've recently decided to try to teach myself the basics of piano, because my band teacher recommended it. I play both clarinet and saxophone. Can anyone give me some tips on what books to use to teach myself, what techniques I should use to help myself learn.

Thanks for any tips!

And please don't suggest getting a piano teacher. I have tried, but I can't afford it.

You may download "The groundwork of the Leschetizky Method", by Malwine Brée. For a beginner, I think it is a good approach. After this, when you feel more confident, look for the dozens and dozens of posts, here, in Piano forum, about technique and members personal experiences. Believe me, it`s a true treasure, where you may learn a lot and choose your own way.
Best wishes
Rui

All you have to do is think about how you want to play, relax, and then play -- oh (!), and listen while you play.  Always listen !

I'm self taught as well man. First you will most likely want to learn how to read sheet music for the bass clef, assuming you know the treble. This way you can find a song you really enjoy and try your best to enjoy it. I started off this way, pick a song you love so much that you can push through learning it. Don't worry about difficulty. Enjoyment is more important than anything.
