on: May 17, 2010, 02:23:46 PM
Hi all,

My daughter is going to have the grade 4 piano exam. This is the first time she is taking the AMEB. I just wonder general knowledge. What sort of question the student needs to know? Can any someone give some tip thanks.

Hey there. I had my last AMEB exam about one and a half years ago (7th grade), so my memory is a little fuzzy. But if I remember correctly, they don't ask too much about general knowledge for 4th grade. Although my piano teacher always insisted that I knew my stuff.

I had to learn some history about the composers of all the pieces I played (only the main list, not the extra list). I had to know a little bit about the eras of the pieces (Baroque, Classical, Romance, and the one after that-- I can't remember).

I remember that the examiners didn't really ask for most of these things until the later grades (6th and 7th I think?). They asked me some pretty general questions like "What do you know about this person", "What is a Study/Minuet/Waltz/etc?" and so on. Still, it doesn't hurt to over prepare just a little bit!

I wish your daughter luck for her exam~ Just tell her to stay calm; nervous fingers play nervous pieces. :)

Doesn't your music teacher teach her this stuff???

Find out if your music teacher has an AMEB Syllabus book? If so - there is a guideline to what the examiners will ask for each grade at the exam.

If she doesn't, then it's the piano teachers responsibility to find out what will be asked. That is what you pay them for isn't it???

I mean, I would look up my book and tell you, but 1) I'd be doing your piano teachers job for him/her and 2) I loaned the book to one of my students to choose a couple of extra pieces for his exam, so I don't have it here with me until next week.
