Quiting one of many bad habits.
on: May 22, 2010, 05:53:43 PM
During this month, I discovered that when I am playing, both my little fingers stand flat and are not curve as my other fingers (like when English drink tea).  Someone told me that this is due to my nervousness, so without knowing it, it became an uncounscious habit.

I detected it when I played the first Hanon lessons, then I recorded myself palying some pieces and I saw the little fingers stand (specially the right one).

Is there a way in which I can quit that habit?

Though, I don't think it's about nervousness. It's very common to have tensions in your pinky, and I guess that's what it is. So play slowly, and think about relaxing in your fingers. I wouldn't worry too much, though.. A lot of pianists has the same thing, even many of the best do it, soo...

Real tension free playing can take years to achieve.  Keep not working at it (i.e. it's not what you don't do but that you do that's the problem).

Not having seen you play it is difficult to detect if you are doing something incorrect, or are just making much ado about nothing.

There are different and conflicting schools of thought to how much to curl or extend the 5th finger.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

You just said that, no need to say it again.

Let us not spam yet another thread with an unending circular debate.  If you wish to continue, use the old thread.

Actually I know a very famous piano teacher who drinks tea as he teaches piano - with relaxed wrist/elbow and no fingers sticking out.  You may think it irrelevant but why would you raise your elbow to drink tea?  Brush your teeth?  It should hang relaxed at your side.

Quantum, I'm just making it clear it's not an either/or it's a not.

try as hard as you can not to stretch your fingers. Practice this by playing a scale so slowly that you can control if your fingers are flat. Gradually accelerate until you can play with arched fingers. There are some pieces where it is hard to play with arched fingers. In these, it is ok to play with the flat fingers
