Leo Ornstein Pieces
on: May 26, 2010, 05:43:13 PM
Hi
I was thinking about playing some random Ornstein composition.
I actualy dont like his works! They give me headaches ... so I was thinking maybe if i play one of is pieces I will understand his style a little better.
So my question is what are his easiest pieces? Are they all realy hard? There is no way I can play something like "Suicide on a Aeroplaine" or "Dance Sauvage".
Thanks

Have you listened to Hamelin's Ornstein cd? Some of the shorter pieces aren't that difficult. The middle movement(s) of the 8th sonata contains some easy and quite lovable pieces.

Also, Janice Weber recorded a disk of Ornstein's piano music that shows off more music that isn't from his early enfant terrible style, which is when Suicide in an Airplane and Danse Sauvage come from. His Fourth Piano Sonata is actually quite neoromantic in sound and would make an impressive concert work.

Just keep in mind the Janice Weber is a terrible pianist. The 4th sonata does probably sound much better.

Edit: Not terrible. Bad word. She could be better ;)

Hahaha ok I got it.
I have 1 or 2 ideas... I will try to get the sheets and see were it goes from there.
It will probably be the 2nd mov. of his 8th sonata...not all of it just a part, to see if I like it just a tiny bit.
Thank you for the help !

That wasn't the point of my post, but yes, she could be better. She is by no means awful, though. Anyways, if you don't want to listen to her, you can hear more recordings here. You can also download the sheets from there. Leo Ornstein's music is public domain, thanks to the efforts of his son and grandson.
