La Campanella by Liszt
on: June 08, 2010, 03:08:38 AM
Hello,

Today I saw a video of Li Yundi La playing La Campanella by Liszt on Youtube. From what I could see, and what others said, apparently this piece is SUPER, SUPER hard, and I was wondering if any of you guys have played this piece before. If so, is it as hard as people say? And when do you think I'll be able to play it? (I understand if you say in a 100 years) I'm currently 13 years old, been learning piano for 5 years, and am attempting to play Liszt's Paganini etude No. 5 in E major.

I am also 13 years old. ;D I am half-way through this piece. It wasn't THAT hard. I practiced about 17 times a week.  I am also a hothead type. I rushed through the piece(most people say I wasn't supposed to do) I have learned piano for 7 and a half years now. I have been learning for only 3 months. I liked Yundi Li's recording the best. 'It Wasn't THAT hard.' (Also wondering why recently I am finding a lot of 13-years-olds.)

Cheers here ;D

If you are learning it for yourself, then go right ahead.  It doesn't seem like an easy piece at all to play convincingly in front of a room full of people.

A girl played this in a competition two years ago as her closing piece, and BUTCHERED the hell out of it!!  The other pieces she played, some other etudes and a Debussy piece, were fine, but she got wrecked by her nerves whenever there was a jump in the Liszt (the piece has tight fingering and awkward jumps in pretty much every single variation).  I felt bad for her!  ::)

What else have you played... 7 and a half years is a good amount of time, but have you played any Chopin etudes, or any other pieces by Liszt?  Make sure you're not jumping way too far ahead, because La Campanella is a massive piece for a 13 year old  ;)

I think Campanella has it's own specific problems, mainly fast leaps and fast repeated notes.
Aside from that the difficulty is mainly psychological.
I haven't played it so far and I won't do it in the near future, because I'm scared of it and because it goes eminently on my nerves when it's not played very well (Well perhaps it goes also on my nerves as a composition to some extent... :P )

Yeah, I've played it before. I thought it was an interesting piece to play, and not that tough either. The learning process was fun :)
I don't see why you can't play it;)

La Campanella is definitely a hard piece to learn. If you really want to know a hard piece, you must look at Grand galop Chromatique from Listz. Only the very talented players are able to play this piece.
