I like Messiaen's music that I've heard and I play his piece Plainte calme.

I don't recall if I've yet to hear any of his Études. Would those be the Catalogues d'oiseaux pour piano?

I think this has been discussed in another thread.  There are 4 etudes:  Ile de Feu 1, mode de valeurs et d'intensité, neumes rythmiques, and Ile de Feu 2.  They're  studies in rythm, the way Messiaen conceived it.  I only played the first and the last.  REally exciting pieces.  Dedicated to the Papaouise, I think.  You can hear the jungle calling throughout.  Now, if I were "retrouvailles" or "hztb", I'd simply say, "when in doubt, look it up.  google it.  useful stuff"
Sooner or later I'm going to get a scanner and learn how to use it...

Nah, I think I would have actually pointed a link to where one could buy these four etudes and possibly a recommendation for a recording, with a possible explanation or so. Read my posts, for I can be quite informative. Just because I said "look it up" once or twice doesn't mean that that phrase can be found in all of my various thousands of posts.

Would those be the Catalogues d'oiseaux pour piano?

Those are a huge cycle of pieces that are not etudes, but rather pieces that, while still immensely difficult like the etudes, chronicle the lives of various birds in music. Some of them are quite detailed in their depictions of nature.

Good luck to you.

I have only one Messiaen score. It is about 500 pages and weighs 3 tons.

Are you sure you don't confuse it with Sorabji?

I have just located it and it appears I exagerated.

429 pages and about 1 kilo. I had to walk about a mile with the damned thing in my rucksack, all the way from the bookshop to my Hotel.

Damned good exercise though.

If he has that opera, I would just about give my right arm for it. I love that opera and can't stop watching the DVD I bought of the production at De Nederlandse Opera a few years back.

You can save your right arm old chap, it is called Turangalila Symphony.

I assume this music is something special as Wikipedia lists some 21 recordings.

There is even a video on youtube posted by some chap called jre58591 ;D.

I will have to give it a listen.

Yeah, that fellow on YouTube has some class for posting that video, heh. I can't guarantee you'll love it, but you should make an effort to listen to it.

The turangalila is a MASTERPIECE!!!!!!  Love it.
In fact, the opera is 5 or 6 volumes.  Lasts 4-5 hours.

Are you trying to beat the forum record for copyright infringements in the same day???

We do not do this here.

No need to throw your toys out of the pram, just read the forum rules first.

Posting scans of Messiaen scores is pure idiocy and could bring unwanted attention from publishers.
