Fur Elise
on: July 02, 2010, 09:56:58 AM
Hi,

This may sound like an idiotic questions to anyone who knows anything about the piano but I've only been playing for 3 weeks so I no next to nothing about it.  Anyway, I've been learning Fur Elise from sheet music I got off the internet and during the part where you play all the E's the left hand crosses over the right hand.  Why do you do this when it would seem easier to do without crossing over?

Cheers

First do what's written, then change if you feel like it. Since you've only been playing for this short time, make it a habit to always do what the scores tells you.

Good luck :)

No, it's not an idiotic question.  While it would SEEM easier to do it without crossing, you should try it as written and realize it's actually easier to PLAY as written.

It is a more elegant solution than thumping E's with fingers that seem most convenient.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

And if Beethoven wrote it, I'm sure it's reason enough... :)

So what your suggesting is that Beethoven may indeed know more about playing the piano than me. ;D   It's a humbling concept, but one that is probably not without it's merits.  I'm going to go with Beethoven on this one, it looks kind of flash anyway.

Thanks for your help
