Digital Piano with Temperaments? Anyone know one?
on: July 05, 2010, 02:08:27 AM
I was trying to look for a Digital Piano where you could change temperaments but so far I've only come across something like the very high-end Roland C-30 and $2,000Yamahas.  Does anyone know of a Casio Privia or something along that range where you can change the Temperaments?

Maybe I'm naive but why would you want to do that?

It's for playing period music.  Equal Temerament is a relatively new invention, before that there were many different temperaments.  There are plenty of sites on google against ET as well as it is a flawed system.

I think that is an excellent question. Wish I could honestly answer it for you. I haven't seriously shopped for anything digital in years. I somehow doubt it, but that would be a great feature.

Yes, indeed. But do you think that keyboard music from that period was performed at that time on a non tempered keyboard instrument? How would that work for a concert? Would the performers need to have different instruments tuned for the different keys of the works?

My experience in performing period music is to leave the modern piano out and use brass, strings, woodwinds or voices to get the pure non tempered effect. For example, Monteverdi was always performed acapella.

I've certainly come across keyboards with different temperaments and when I finally cave in and buy a keyboard I'll be getting one with that feature because it must be fascinating to experiment. I wish I could remember but the model numbers are always so utterly unmemorable.... I'd suggest you look at the web sites of the big names (Yamaha, Roland, Kawai, Korg...) and see what they mention. Not much point looking at the cheaper keyboards, I suspect!

roland makes a number of instruments which are capable of emulating historic temperaments.  in fact, I think almost all of them do.

Thanks for the Roland tip. I just spent a few minutes investigating (you have to read the owner's manual) and all the Roland stage pianos offer a selection of temperaments - not a huge range, but enough to be interesting. The really funky one is the top-of-the-line music workstation, the Fantom G8, which as far as I can see allows you to specify your own temperament, note by note, to the nearest cent. All right, it's a bore to figure out but I guess once you've done it you can store it.

I have seen a couple.  It may have been Roland.  I remember it was one of the bigger brands.

Yes.  I was just thinking now you can probably program each note exactly how you want it.  Or even record something and go back and tweak every note -- You could modulate that way and still stay in a specific temperament (I think).

Many digitals have this capability, and not just Rolands. I think it would be tough to find one that doesn't have this feature.
