What should I play?
on: July 06, 2010, 07:34:30 PM
I'll try to be concise and not bore you with my life story.  I've taken lessons for a while, but when I started college last year I stopped taking lessons, and mostly stopped practicing.  Between work and school I haven't really found the time.

Here's my problem, I've been wanting to start playing more again, but honestly I don't play many songs I like.  Most of the songs I play are waltzes, or are from the baroque period which is fine don't get me wrong.  It's just not the kind of music I like listening to.  I also have a book of george winston's pieces, but to put it bluntly they're too easy [I need a challenge }:) ] and I only like a few of them.  I'm not familiar with the time periods of music, I'm basically looking for something after baroque and before modern.  I think it's considered classical or romantic period.

Anyway, do any of you have suggestions where to start?  To give you an idea of my skill level, the hardest pieces I've played are probably Clair de Lune and Chopin's grand valse briliante Op. 18.  Also played Chopin's valse Op. 69 No. 2 (posthumous).  The last is probably the one I like best.  I wouldn't mind something slightly harder than those though.

You should try out Schubert's impromptus (no.2 or no.4), or take a sonata like Beethoven's op.10 no.1 or Mozart KV309 in c major (this one is easier).

What do you think?
Working on:
Bach - Toccata in f sharp minor, BWV 910
Beethoven - Sonata op.57, "Appassionata"
Liszt - "Après une lecture du Dante"
Tchaikovsky - Concerto 1

Thanks for the help.  I listened to them.  I kind of like how impromptu no.2 sounds best.  The Beethoven sonata you recommended was free on here though, so I printed it out and started playing a little.  I didn't care for the sound of the mozart though.

It's kind of funny though.  I listened to them and thought they sounded complicated.  Then looked at the sheet music and they look so much simpler :) (but still a challenge).

After playing the 4 Impromptus, i can say that nº1 is the most difficult, followed by the 2nd one. Nº3 and 4 aren't very difficult. If you like nº2, then go for it... i warn you, that's not easy... ;D
