Balakirev- The Lark
on: July 07, 2010, 11:57:36 AM
I'm just starting out on this piece and it would be helpful if anyone could offer their own experiences with it or give advice on learning it.

Thanks, Steve

I personally have avoided this one as it seems to be the only [less demanding] work of Balakirev that everyone does. Going on the work I have done with the 2nd Sonata, 2nd Scherzo & the Oriental Fantasy Islamay, he is a pregnant dog to play & can understand why few are brave enough to take on the broad range of his solo piano repertoire.
Currently rehearsing:

Chopin Ballades (all)
Rachmaninov prelude in Bb Op 23 No 2
Mozart A minor sonata K310
Prokofiev 2nd sonata
Bach WTCII no 6
Busoni tr Bach toccata in D minor

Great piece! I divided the piece into sections. I hilighted the melody and worked on that alone--with the correct fingerging to voice the alternating theme between the hands. The cadenza.....not too bad....falls nicely under the hands. Do lots of recording to check if your melody is projecting. I'd start working on the last 2 pages first.....making sure the ornaments are cleanly played with the melody. Have fun and good luck.
