moonlight sonata 3rd movement
on: July 09, 2010, 09:03:22 PM

I've managed to get through movements 1&2 and am now starting on the 3d movement. I'm guessing about a year to even getting it sounding intelligible, anyone have any pointers? I have no intention of ever playing it for anyone. it's wholly an academic pursuit.

Hi,

work with your hands separated.

check if the rim of your hand is stable when you play the first four notes in the right hand.
check if your wrist is supple.
play the RH in chords of 4 and check if the movement of your arm is/feels right. Check if the 4 notes of every grip/chord are played exactly simultaneously.
think about the musical image that you want to project (it's not a lot of fast notes alone!)
check if your shoulders and arm are relaxed whilst you are playing.

If not, work on this. If you don't know how, consult a teacher!

Good luck!!

I suggest you practice 20 numbers down your fastest speed, do hands seperately, and be as critical as if you were playing for your worst nightmare who is trying to find the smallest mistakes.  It works. good luck.  explosions

Attempting pieces that are too far beyond your technical ability can actually cause a lot of problems.  It's good to challenge yourself, but you'll learn much faster by playing pieces that are more appropriate -- then once you DO move on to the last movement of Moonlight Sonata, you'll be able to play it far better and with less practice.

Yea experience is a great help with playing difficult pieces. I actually learned it this year and it took about 1 month to get it to a pretty high level. Of course it wasn/t my first Beethoven Sonata so that greatly helped.

The best advice I belive I can give you is to use wrist rotation for the continuing motion in the left hand.

The piece is not really as difficult as it looks. Most of it is arpeggios. Learn the right hand really well and you should be in good shape.

Don't play the right hand like you'd play C# minor broken chords from a scale book  ;)

Start slow, and try to make sure each finger is giving good weight on the keys.  People fly through this piece, but they are barely touching the keys and their hands are flailing up and down the piano.  Slow practice, and as an exercise try accenting different fingers going up; like imagine the 2nd finger notes are on the beat and they get an accent.  It's a good way to see what you can do with the broken pattern, and it makes sure each finger can hold its own in this piece.

I have a few more suggestions, but I'm heading out right now, so let me know!

Try practicing from slow to fast
If the final tempo marking was.. ABOUT 200.
You should try 50 at first (Crazy I know, but when you play, there WILL be mistakes if you just play it), Then add 4 or 3. (50-53-56 or 50-54-58, etc) You wouldn't feel any difference. But make sure you fixed the first problems first.
You wouldn't feel any difference of tempo if you add only 3 per day or... per training..
