I'm digging around for my ARCT repertoire right now, and I'm having considerable difficulty finding a List E (Late 20th/21st century) piece that I really like. I will admit I am not a fan of modern repertoire - I'm a late classical/early romantic girl at heart!

If anyone knows of any repertoire at this level that isn't too dissonant, I would greatly appreciate their suggestions =]

Ooh - that is really wonderful, thank you! Unfortunately, I don't think it would qualify for List E based on the date it was composed. I think it's probably more Early 20th Century, along with Debussy, Fauré, & Ravel. Definitely a piece I would like to play at some point, though!

Check out Ned Rorem's Barcarolles (1949) Not late late 20th century, but I think it might be list E material. Very beautiful, but nothing extreme in terms of modernist sounds.

you could take a look at Prokofiev's Toccata/Visions Fugitives/Sonatas etc
or at Bartok's Mikrokosmos/Allegro Barbaro etc.

there's way more then that....

But again, all this is from the first half of the last century! Prokofiev died in 1953 and Bartók eight years before that! What about, for example, extracts from Messiaen's Catalogue d'Oiseau (although even that goes back a fair few years) or other later shorter extracts from his piano works - or some of the shorter late pieces by Sorabji, such as Passeggiata Variata and Passeggiata Arlecchinesca; these two were each major contributors to 20th century piano literature. Elliott Carter's Night Fantasies is a major piano work although it is quite substantial and very difficult, but he has written a good many shorter piano pieces since then and may well write more.

Best,

I would suggest looking up some composers from whatever country you are from. I would guess that ARCT is Canadian, so look up some Canadian composers that might be good. There are a couple that might work, such as Alexina Louie, François Morel, and Jacques Hétu (just passed away this year). The latter has a wonderful set of variations which should stun and wow any crowd.

Looks like a peek into Karl Jenkin's and Fazil Say's Works. They are still alive and well.

No offense, but both of those composers are terrible.

Oddly enough, Bartok and Prokofiev do count for List E. Even though they are slightly early. I am not a fan of Alexina Louie's music - I've had to study a lot of it for my history exams, and it's just not my cup of tea. I know she's very well thought of here, though. I will look into Morel and Hétu though, thank you.

Thank you for your suggestions everyone! They are much appreciated.

Try Ligeti's Etudes, They're written from 1985 to 2001!

Carl Vine is a composer I was recommended to "look at". His sonatas are meant to be "difficult" to play and they would certainly fit in with the contemporary period as he is still alive (born 1954).

Currently rehearsing:

Chopin Ballades (all)
Rachmaninov prelude in Bb Op 23 No 2
Mozart A minor sonata K310
Prokofiev 2nd sonata
Bach WTCII no 6
Busoni tr Bach toccata in D minor
