Tips for cordination?
on: July 20, 2010, 02:24:20 PM
Hello. I have been playing piano for a few months. (Self-teaching.) I was wondering, what are techniques or exercises I can do to improve coordination?

For example, I'm learning "River Flows in You" by "Yiruma" at the moment.

First, the hands follow a steady rhythm. (Where the bass and treble clef notes are played at the same pace.)

Afterward, the treble notes are played at a faster pace while the bass notes keeps the original pace. (At this section, I begin to play very slowly and have mental blanks.)

So, any tips or exercises? Thank you. :D

I have only been playing for 7 months myself but I do believe the Yiruma's pieces may be above a beginners level. You may have an easier time learning coordination, speed, and dynamics if you try to learn easier pieces first and work your way up to more difficult pieces.

Practice.

For something like you mentioned (not familiar with the song you mentioned) I'd suggest slowing down the beginning until you can keep an even speed throughout the whole thing.  Then work on speeding it up.

So basically practice :).

Improving general coordination means that you'll be practicing slowly.  You will repeat very small, short sections.  You'll know it's small enough if you don't have to think about what comes next.
