Need another piece
on: July 22, 2010, 09:54:21 AM
Hey! I need another piece for a concert in december.
I'm currently working on Brahms' rhapsody op.79 no 1, a prelude and fugue (no.3, BWV 848) and Debussy Danse/Tarantelle Styrienne. I won't start playing until august, because I'm not near a piano at the moment.
I was thinking another Brahms like the op. 116 Fantasien no.1 or op.117 no.3 Intermezzo. Maybe the 5th etude tableaux in D minor by Rachmaninoff.
Or maybe something more difficult, though I've never played one of them. A Hungarian rhapsody by Liszt. I've been listening to all of them and I like the 6th in D flat major, the 9th (Pesther Carneval) in E flat major and the 15th (Rácňczi-Marsch) in A minor, but I don't know if they are too much for my level.
Could you recommend me some more pieces and tell me which Hungarian rhapsody (from the 1st to the last) is the easiest?
Thank you and best wishes,
Michael

Using the search function, I recommend the following threads:

Usually turns out to be no. 3 4 5 or 6, or 11, which is lovely.

Thank you for the reply Invictious, I'm good with octaves, so I should be able to play no. 6, but it's on a bad key for me, I haven't played many things in D flat Major.
I think I'll go for no. 11, but I'll have a look at the others you told me. Thanks again.
Does someone know something about the Brahms?

The octaves part is in B flat major.
Also, it may not be a bad idea program a Mozart, Haydn, or Beethoven piece instead of a second romantic piece to have a more well-rounded program. OR if you have the time, do both.

I have presented performances of the Liszt HR No 6, 11 and 15 here. I play them all to a "working standard". Personally I would go for the 1st or 10th as that would complement your other selections.

I am a big fan of Brahms!!! To couple with Rhapsody in B minor op.79 no.1, you may like to consider slower and reflective piece such as Intermezzo? any of op.117 would be lovely... or even op.118 no.2...
However, how about 20th century music? Gershwin three Preludes can be fantastic "finale" to your recital...

Thank you all so much for the replies, I'll try Gershwin and Haydn, and see if I can do both. If not... I'll go for the Intermezzi. I'll try some of the HR you recommended me too, I have lots of time until December.
