(Updated) Uncomfortable chord - quick question
on: July 28, 2010, 10:51:19 PM
Hi guys, I'll make it quick:
Mephisto Waltz No. 1, the chord circled on the screenshot below in red.
I'm finding it very uncomfortable to play because of the D/E being so close to each other. It requires me to stretch the second finger of the left hand extremely far away from the 4th/3rd fingers. Is there something I'm missing here, is it just a lack of stretch in the hand? How would you play this chord? I can rather comfortably reach a range of a 9th with my left hand. Thanks.

Playing Piano is the easiest thing in the world, All you have to do is have the right finger on the right key at the right moment.

Ditto. Thumb for two keys. Much easier. And what Liszt meant I imagine.

So for the sequence of chords you could have:
321, 421, 521

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Quantum,
Which chords are you referring? I can't imagine a 123 stretch for any of those chords.

First bar, the three chords.
If it were a five note E7 chord you would use the fingers 5321. So 321 for the written chord follows in that pattern.

I thought you meant having a 1 and 2 on E and D making that first chord a much more uncomfortable stretch.

Hi guys,
Didn't want to create a new topic, so I'll post my question here (if thre are no replies in a day or two then I will consider starting a separate thread, although I would prefer to avoid this).
Could someone show me their preferred fingering for the part circled in red below? (still the same piece - Mephisto Waltz no 1). I have no teacher unfortunately (budget issues). I have a few ideas myself but I'm afraid that once I get the playing of this part up to speed, it will turn out that my fingering is impractical, so I'd prefer to ask someone who can already play this up to speed, hopefully I'll avoid ingraining a bad habit this way. Thanks!

By the looks of it, a typical:
15 3 2 1 3 2 1

As perfect_pitch illustrates above.
Try to think of the finger groupings as solid chords.
