Is there a piano mafia?

A couple of years ago I had a teacher tell me (in all seriousness) that there is a piano mafia, is there  :-/?  I suppose if there were, they would be reading this right now.

Okay, ...I'm stumped! What do you mean by Piano Mafia, guess I don't understand. What would they do?

Well, I am not positive about all of it.  But, when the teacher was telling me, he was pointing them out on some brochure for some piano something (they all looked a little spooky).  He said that they decide who gets the big names, who wins contests... etc.  When I was leaving his studio, some of his last words were, "remember I know the piano mafia" as though I needed to keep that in mind for the rest of my life and as though it would affect my future.

Do you think it's real?

Are you sure he wasn't talking about judges? No, while I don't doubt that some if not many competitions are somewhat political, I've never heard of anything like an actual piano mafia. I serious doubt if he was serious. Probably just trying to get you to practice! ;D
(just kidding)!

In certain piano competitions, that is definitely the case.

Are these the people who decide the exact percentage/proportions of the amount of mental and physical stamina needed to play the piano??

they always succumb to tears.  they will not shoot u if u try ur best.  but if ur all arrogant - then they fire the ak 47.  (i actually haven't tried tears in the lesson - but imagine that if i wanted to get somewhere - it might be worth a try.  sort of kidding though.  i mean a 45 year old crying might be too dramatic.)  suppose that a gift card to their fav. restaurant m ight work.

i think the best thing to give the mafia is practice practice.  then, if they shoot - they have something to shoot at.  and, u don't feel as bad as if u haven't done ur best.  say, if someone shoots holes in what u did - u just say - well, it was defiantely my very very best.  so, i don't care.

now, if ur really good then u have to think about a get away car.  a limo of some kind.  bullet proof.  what to do immediately after the encore.  some kind of magic trick where u go through a secret door to secret garage adn escape that way.  and, ur hands and everything have to be protected.  suppose it is a secret and glam life at the top.  but, how many people are really there?  and, how many give it up to just be normal and not worry about what everyone else thinks is 'being at the top.'  i mean, andre watts is probably careful of his hands, but i think he is quite normal about talking to fans,e tc.  he doesn't seem mafiaish.  maybe the ones that are mafia like have some kind of psychological problems.

One of my old teachers told me that the piano competition in Italy were rigged and run by the mafia.
I also know of some professors who if they like you will put in a good word ;) for you wit the judges
