to play the preludes of the partita in c minor and g major? how long does it take for the average person to play them without wrong notes or unsteadiness? i've been going at it for 3-4 days for about 30 mins at a go but im still having slight problems

Oh it'll take about 25 minutes each and be sure to start slow and then gradually go faster once you encounter no problems.

On a side note... Which partita and which composer are you referring to?  Nobody has any idea because there are about 500 composers of partitas with preludes!

I guess you are talking about Bach's Partitas  ;)

What you are asking is very relative. Depends a lot on the person, his/her capabilities, the inspiration of the moment, external stimulus, his/her education and training in how to rehearse and memorize, technical capabilities, etc.

For example, I learned entire Bach's Partita 2 in c minor in one week, from memory while been a student. The external stimulus was that my former teacher asked me to do it, so I tried to use my time the best way I could in order to achieve it. But, years after I graduated, I also studied another works that cost me months to learn, such as English Suite no 2 (by the way, I think that I never, ever, played one piece without any wrong note).

Many years after I did read the Leimer-Gieseking books and did found some excellent advices in order to memorize and study fast, actively and understandingly. Among others, it comes with examples of how to memorize French suite no 6. I think that it's a very interesting book. Just give it a try, I can be useful for your needs  :)
