Which piece do you suggest?
on: August 03, 2010, 07:56:07 PM
Hi everyone!

Thanks for all the interesting threads that makes amateurs like me improve their skills!

I'm just coming here because i want to get advice for one of my next pieces. I'm currently playing pieces (among other easier ones) from level 7 on the  website:
-Chopin: Waltz 64 2
-Chopin: Nocturne 9 2
-Mozart: Alla turca
-Schumann: Träumerei
-Beethoven: Sonata 27 2, 1st and 2nd mvt

Yes I know that's very cliché but these are some of the pieces that makes me feel emotions.
I would like to try a harder piece together with other works and i particularly like 4 harder ones:
-Beethoven: Sonata 27 2, 3rd mvt (i know the first two mvts but i don't want this to be a criterion)
-Chopin: Fantasie impromptu
-Liszt: La Campanella
-Rachmaninov: Prelude 23 5

Could you tell me what could be the best suitable pieces for me?
(you can also suggest me other pieces, that will extend my small culture ;) )

Thank you,

_Nisa_

Those 'harder pieces' you mentioned, are quite a (too) huge leap in technical difficulty.
Of those composers, you might better do for example:
- Chopin: op72 no2
- Liszt: Liebesträum
- Rachmaninov: op 23 no4

These are also pretty famous pieces and very nice.

Fantasie-Impromptu and La Campanella are much harder than the lvl. 7 pieces. I don't quite know your age or how long you learnning, but go for beethoven op27 no2 III, it's easier than it seems (If you want a challenge).

The Valses Poeticos by Granados are really beautiful.
And his 12 Spanish Dances are too.
About the third movement of Beethovens sonata op. 27 no. 2.. go for it! ;D
Have you ever heard Mozarts sonatas K 333 and K 457?
K 457 is pretty hard, but worth the effort.

If you're set on doing something by Rachmaninoff, I'd suggest Op.23 No.10 - it closes the Op.23 Preludes quietly, but is thematically dense for its brevity.

Hi,

About myself, i took 9 years of private lessons with a good teacher (he was known and appreciated by the conservatory with which he organized concerts) who made me learn both classic and jazz (but i'm not really into jazz...). I remember playing pieces like Chopin Waltz 69 1 & 2, Mozart Alla turca (that's why i learnt it again), among other classical pieces. Then i took a  total break during 3 years and i went back to piano 5 years ago, playing from time to time things like original soundtracks (The Piano, Amelie Poulain, Pirates of the Caribbean, aso ...) or easy classical pieces. I decided in December to return completely to piano at 23yo and now i'm here :)
So after working pieces i like (my previous post) and that are at my level, i wanted to improve my skills and try some kind of a challenge by learning a harder piece.
You know everything now!

- Chopin: op72 no2
Could you precise the name of this piece, please? I can't find any Nocturne/Waltz op72 no2...
I like Liebesträum, but is this really an easier piece compared to the ones i mentioned?

The Valses Poeticos by Granados are really beautiful.
And his 12 Spanish Dances are too.
This is vast! Can you give me some leads by being more specific, please?

Is that sarcastic? I don't get why...  :-[
The Mozart sonatas you gave me are very nice, but Mozart is not really a composer i like to play (maybe baroque music is not my style).

Nisa, I don't enjoy listening to Mozart nearly as much as I enjoy playing his music. It's completely different. :) (By the way, Mozart was classical, not baroque.)

If you're still not convinced, try Haydn. He has a famous C Major and E flat Major sonata (but I forget the categorization numbers at the moment...

In general, Beethoven's sonatas are difficult pieces.

Fantasie Impromptu and Rachmaninoff 25/5 are difficult pieces, but La Campanella is MUCH, MUCH more difficult than even those two! Rachmaninoff 25/4 is a great choice if you want a famous piece.

How about Debussy's Passepied from Suite Bergemesque or a couple movements from Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin" (Prelude, Forlane, Rigaudon, or Menuet)? Fugue is a nice academic work too, but the Toccata is extremely difficult, even harder than La Campanella.

Well, Granados his Spanish Dances no. 2, no. 5 & no.8 are the ones that I really like!
&feature=related
In the side bar you'll see more Spanish Dances composed by him.
His Valses Poeticos no. 3 and no. 6 are beautiful (in my opinion).
I'm sorry if I gave you the idea that I was being sarcastic, because I really wasn't!
The third movement is pretty hard, but it's worth the effort, because it blows everyone away.
And it seems harder than it really is, as said before by wert718.
So I really mean it; Just go for it!  ;)
Good luck!

Valerie

Typo, my mistake. I ment Chopin nocturne opus 27 no2.
About Liebestraum, it is indeed quite easier than La Campanella, but it is still harder than what you are playing at the moment.

Yes, totally different. I like to listen to some Mozart pieces but i struggle finding an interpretation and the dynamics (except Alla turca since i must have played it thousands of times!) while playing. So i often give up sadly because i don't enjoy playing it.
By the way, thanks for the correction about classical! ;)

Granados is also very interesting! In a very different style, but i really like it! Thanks for the precisions.

Noted for the Nocturne!
The aim is also to get a challenge and learn to play harder pieces as well ;)

Thank you all for your great advice! It was very helpful and gave me many ideas!. Up to me right now.
