Scarlatti Trills Advice K.1
on: August 11, 2010, 12:37:55 PM
Hello,
Attempting Scarlatti K.1 Two-voice sonata and was wondering about the trilling here. It does not sound right to me the way that I am doing it. For example: Trilling a C as D-C-D-C-D-C Am I doing this wrong? Thanks for any advice you could give.
2nd question is the fingering as you are going up the scale gets a bit tangled as you are hitting the same note with both hands. Is it possible to do it with one hand>? How is that done?

In music of the Baroque period, trills do typically commence on the upper auxiliary (so what you describe sounds correct).
When voices played by the left hand and right hand happen to coincide on the same note, you're generally not expected to play it with both hands. Take into account the duration and articulation of the "shared" note, and use the hand that makes most sense in context (i.e., most efficient execution and least disruption to the flow of the music).

To clarify on Scarlatti Kk1 Sonata. When I hear it being played either on youtube or on CD it seems they are starting on the note and trilling up to the auxilliary and it seems to me that this sounds better as well. I am totally nuts?
Is there something with Scarlatti that I am not getting, perhaps the Italian trilling style or his personally differed from other composers?
Also for the left hand are they supposed to be short stacatto style notes like Bach and not played legato? My teacher told me for Bach he should be played this way but slightly longer than a staccato has anyone any opinion on this?
