Beethoven Sonata 23 (Appassionata)
on: July 21, 2004, 12:42:18 AM
I was wondering what teachers think about teaching Beethoven's Sonata Appassionata (23) to students trying to presue music as a profession. My teacher said that no matter how good it is i would just be laughed at (Im trying out for Juilliard) My current idea for a beethoven sonata is the Op. 110

I think your teacher is probably right, unless you are a great musician already. Unfortunately many jury members have very narrow minded views about what should be played in an exam. I disagree with that but I think as well that Appassionata, being overplayed, is too risky. So is op 110 in a way, but for some reasons this played is often considered as a good entrance exam idea.
Bad ideas include as well: Moonlight, Pathetique (probably too "easy" anyway for that kind of exam), op 111.

Good ideas: op 109, Waldstein, op 101.
