How do you finger triplets?
on: August 24, 2010, 12:31:39 PM
Hi. I was wondering, is there a rule for fingering triplets? Do you move your hand so you are able to use your fastest/longest fingers? Or do you try making as little movement as possible?

For example, I was looking at this piece. https://img822.imageshack.us/img822/6205/imagedb.jpg

Now, do I use my longest/fastest fingers (index, middle, ring) or do I try and use my whole hand? How would you place your fingers?

Like, I could do it like this... (Whole hand)

123, 1234, 534, 543, 423, 432, 312, 321 etc.

Or like this

123, 1234, 423, 432, 423, 432, 423, 432 etc.

Feedback? :D

The fingering principles for scalar passages like the one illustrated are the same irrespective of whether they're written in triplets or not.  As always, you should be guided by ease, efficiency, and consideration of the articulations and dynamics that are called for.
What passes you ain't for you.
