My first piano composition (with string and calliope backing)
on: September 11, 2010, 08:49:55 PM
I've been working on this piece for a few days and finally finished this morning. I started with a simple D progression of Dm - FM - Am - Dm, then FM - Am - CM, then CM - Em - GM, bakc to Dm - FM - Am - DM.
I've dubbed it "Notes that Carry"
I used a Yamaha YPG535MM to record the chords and melody, then uploaded them to a program called Guitar-Pro to add an orchestral harp, and a string + calliope backing. Then exported the MIDI and converted it to an mp3 using Direct MIDI - MP3.
Let me know what you think please. =]

I'm sorry to double post but my topic's been up for three days now and I've gotten no feedback... I know there must be someone on this forum insterested in original pieces.

Maybe the people who listened don't like it and are afraid to be mean?
I think it sounds like a great start, but to me there doesn't seem to be anything resembling a coherent melody coming through. That's not to say there needs to be one, since plenty of music is more abstract... but I've just never understood the appeal of that genre
Still, it sounds a lot better than most of the other first-time recordings I've come across on sites like YouTube.

The strings sound funny and bumpy making the piece sound like it's transposing around the place. You have a simple cycling melody which goes through some fuzzy moments but most importantly it is not being supported effectively by the strings. The wires connecting the posts are there but the posts are not very strong.
