What makes of Grand in UK up to 15,000GBP
on: September 16, 2010, 08:28:01 AM
What makes of grands would be possible to buy in the UK in the price range of 10-15,000 pounds?

I've seen the Yamaha G and C series in or close to that range, but rarely seen other makes. Who else is out there making affordable and decent grands at these prices?

15K is quite a serious amount. Are you considering second hand? Will a baby grand do?
You would get a nice post war one owner Steinway baby grand for that, perhaps even a full size one.

During my UK piano hunting days I was after an upright. The most impressive place was Venables pianos. The owner seemed genuinely interested in his work. Since then, with his son, he has started his own range of pianos, with a grand topping it out at 11,000 pounds.

Venables used to be Steinway dealers. My advice is take your time, don't buy in a rush.

Isn't Kemble in the UK? Actually a rebadged Yamaha assembled in the UK?

Hi,
I've just got through the same process as you're embarking on. My advice is to travel to as many dealers as possible. I travelled to Wales, Leeds, Cambridge and the midlands over a couple of months. I saw some lovely pianos and met some great people. It may help not to focus on makes at first, but try to get a picture of the sound and touch you like. I was looking at C3s and found one lovely one and several very average ones. In that budget you could look at a C5 if you have space.
I've sent a PM with one or two specific recommendations, but my main advice is to take your time, travel, and enjoy looking.
Best, Sy

sylvester550, I agree. Take your time. I went all over and spent a year looking for an upright. Play and look inside. If the piano is dodgy the seller usually tries to play for you.
 and interrupts your simple piece,

I would recommend a nice Estonia grand. If a brand new one is too expensive, I am sure you could find a nearly new used one. Sorry, I am not too much up-to-date about their prices.

Hi!

Why buy new? Vintage pianos can be wonderful and my favourites are makes beginning with B. The four string Bluthners are  . . . mouth watering.

The test - hold the sustaining pedal down with the lid up - shout into the piano and see how long the resonance sustains the sound of your voice. Longer the better. Please keep a log of all the pianos you try and post the results here . . . !

Best wishes

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
