Welcome back home again, Derek - you've still got it! This is the spontaneous Derek flight we've been missing for a while here, plenty of harmonic interest, some unexpected turns...and Oh, an absolutely BEAUTIFUL ending! Yes, welcome back indeed!  :)

Hi Derek

I enjoy this very much, too :)
haunting and lyrical, alternating and sometimes both together.

Thanks  :) Another hobby-horse of mine reared up over the last couple of years and kind of took over for a while---piano has been taking a back seat :( still doing it, though. My biggest quandary of late has been trying to figure out what role learning more classical repertoire will play in my musical future. I keep trying to learn a piece, then I get overwhelmed with option paralysis (but I'd love to learn THIS piece!) and then I never finish one. I guess I should probably bring that up in another sub-forum.

The musical material itself is still unquestionably Derek but there is something about the form which is new. I haven't quite worked out what it is yet. As usual there were certain phrases and harmonies I felt inclined to hear developed further but then I suppose that would be Ted and not Derek. I wonder if anybody else saw the friendly ghost of Chaminade in the second section ? Not that it matters one way or the other of course.

I hope this is the first of an impending cluster of improvisations from you. I also look forward to hearing some improvised baroque on the clavichord.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
