do you enjoy orchestral music?
on: September 20, 2010, 03:07:24 AM
I'm guessing most people here enjoy all sorts of classical music beyond instrumental piano. It suddenly dawned on me in the past couple of months---the ONLY era of classical music from which I enjoy anything other than solo instrumental keyboard music---is baroque. Classical era bores me, romantic era bores me (but as always there are a handful of exceptions). But---play me any orchestral piece by Vivaldi, Corelli, Bach, Handel, you name it, I love it! I suspected it early on but as I gain experience I am finding that my musical mind/heart etc. is very baroque. I keep trying to give chances to other styles of music but you can only do that so many times before you realize you belong somewhere.

I love orchestral music, especially of the past 110 years, though my favorite favorite is Bruckner. I love all that you mentioned as well.
Don't let anyone know where you tie your goat.

I can only assume you don't have an ear for orchestration.   All too common with pianists.  I played in a number of high standard amateur orchestras all my youth - it affects what you try to do on th piano.

Of course I do! Music life is not only piano :) I still almost cry listening to some places of Brahm's 4th symphony, for example...

I presume you also like the Furtwangler symphonies?  ;)

My favourite late-romantic symphony would probably be the Elgar 2nd.
