on: September 23, 2010, 02:00:24 AM
For those of you who have done RCM grade 10... or are working on their Gr 10 right now, I'm curious, which pieces/ studies did you learn ?

I took my grade 10 exam slightly more then 4 years ago...i learned some extra rep too as well as ARCT pieces before I took my exam

pieces that I played for my exam:
Bach Prelude and Fugue in E major from book 1
Haydn Sonata in D major Hob 33; L/34
Chopin Nocturne in e minor op.72
Debussy Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum from Children's Corner
Tsitsaros Snow Games
Berens Study in a minor
Heller Prelude in c sharp minor

this is the extra rep that I learned (some I of it is what I started off with for that grade and some I started learning 4 months before my exam)
Bach Prelude and Fugue in G major from book 2
Mozart Sonata in B flat major K.570
Bach Partita no.2 in c minor (Sinfonia)
Rachmaninoff Prelude in G major op.32 no.5
J.S Bach Italian Concerto,Beethoven Sonata op.2 no.2,Mozart Sonatas K.330&333,Chopin Scherzo no.2,Etude op.10 no.12&Fantasie Impromptu

Wow it's been a while!  I think I started using this forum while I was going for my grade 10.

I played:

Bach - Prelude and Fugue in D major (bk1)
Beethoven - Pathetique Sonata Op 13 (mvmts 1 and 2)
Liszt - Liebestraum
Debussy - Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum
List E - Strangeness of Heart (the Beethoven and Liszt were pretty big pieces at the time, so I chose the shortest list E hehe)

Studies:

Rachmaninoff - Etude Tableau in G minor
Moszkowsky - Etude in C major (the one with the left hand that kind of sounds like the intro to the nanananananana batman!!!!)

I kind of went all out; there were WAY easier pieces I could have played (one of my friends picked all the shortest, and 'easier' pieces just to get through the exam)... BUT, I enjoyed everything I played, and I think that helped me get through the exam which was a tad bit stressful.

How about you?  What are you working on now?   I'm guessing you are preparing stuff for the Grade 10  :P
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Wow that's a lot of pieces! Right now I'm starting off with a bunch of pieces and we'll see how many "survive" and which ones I choose for my exam. xD I'm playing the same Haydn sonata and Chopin nocturne as you did.  I'm a bit intimidated by the Haydn sonata. List B was never my strength...

Me too! hehe.

That's what makes choosing pieces so difficult for me.... all the pieces I like are usually the more difficult ones. My teacher and I have to come to a consensus though, but there are some pieces I'm prepared to "fight" for. :D

Yes, I just started a month or so ago and i'm already overwhelmed... I know I have to  memorize about 30 pages of music for this exam, that's almost triple compared to grade 9. But I'm so excited!!
